THE ORIGINS OF JUNIOR AIR MAX 270 — NIKE’S GREATEST INNOVATION
The release of the first Air Max shoe in 1987 came at a pivotal moment in Nike’s history, elevating the brand just as the competition had begun to creep up on them. They dubbed it the “Air Revolution,” and how right they turned out to be. It was named after the technology developed by former NASA engineer Frank Rudy — the first person to capture pressurized air in a tough yet flexible urethane bag — who brought this innovative concept to Nike with the aim of developing the next generation of footwear cushioning. Putting this technology on show was the idea of Nike’s engineer-turned-sneaker-designer Tinker Hatfield, who was inspired to create what he called this “renegade set of shoes” by the inside-out design of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, which showcases the functional and structural elements on the outside of the building. The design was particularly suited for youth and ultimately led to the Air Max 270 for children, one of the most successful additions to the Nike kids’ shoe portfolio. It was a huge risk, but Nike has been reaping the rewards ever since.
